Summary
Stella sticks to the music she likes. She can’t stand the horrible music that pours out of her sister’s speakers. However, she is willing to stand in line for three hours to get an autograph from her sister’s favorite band. Once Stella reaches the table, she realizes the boy she ran into earlier at Starbucks, Oliver, is the lead singer of the band… the band that she hates. Stella and her brother end up getting caught up in a night filled with fun as they prank each other and cook late night dinners. The boys recognize Stella’s talent with a camera and end up offering her a job as their professional photographer for the remainder of the tour.
“Not only did he make Cara’s day by talking to her, but he cheered me up. Just knowing that she was happy was the medicine I needed.”
—Ali Novak, The Heartbreakers
Why should I read this?
The Heartbreakers is a novel filled with warmth and goofiness. It takes the reader on a wild adventure alongside a popular band and a girl trying to understand why they’re popular in the first place. Stella starts to learn that she can have a life outside of her sister’s cancer, and she branches out by meeting the members of the band. Yes, there is another blossoming romance that sprouts up, but sometimes all you need is love.
Overall review
5/5 bookmarks—Ali Novak does another amazing job with this book. She puts such detail and consideration into each character that they seem real. This is an inspiring book and, when the reader finishes, I’m sure that they’ll want to leap out of their comfort zone and try something new. The story is a bit cliché at times, yes, but sometimes the book is even better when you can predict what is going to happen—then you get the satisfaction of getting to watch the whole scenario play out.
